Wood Stoves Have Improved

Wood burning stoves are described as appliances that are either cooking stoves or a heat source. The new wood stoves are clean burning and most of them have high heating efficiency ratings. At one time, a stove was not able to be placed near any walls, almost always located towards the center of a room. However, now there are some models that can be set as close as 8" to a wall.

The wood fuel stoves sometimes referred to as fireplaces stoves, come in many different styles, ranging from traditional looking to contemporary. The three major materials that they are made from include plate steel, iron and sheet metal; at times a mixture of all three may be used. Some of the manufacturers alter the look of the more conventional cast iron stoves by using different types of material on the outer surface. Many times enamel, porcelain and marble are used in a wide range of different colors to change the appearance.

The steel plate wood stoves are usually made from up to ¼" plates, which are stamped and cut into shape. The cast iron ones are made from the cast parts that are bolted together. These parts normally have very detailed lines and markings with clean surfaces that are free from grain markings. There is not a major difference between the cast iron and steel; therefore, it is best to make your choice considering the design, your budget and size of the stove.

Many times it is easy to tell whether or not wood burning stoves are well crafted by looking for tight doors, smooth welds, clean castings and draft controls that are smooth operating. Of course attention to detail and good workmanship are always important. Most of them have metal plates or fire-bricks to help prevent burnout. All of these materials help to increase the life of the stoves and even the thermal mass to some extent. Even after a fire has burned out, wood fireplaces/stoves that weigh 500 lbs. radiate heat for several more hours.

Keep in mind that if you are purchasing a stove to go in a house, then you will need a chimney. The easiest type of wood stoves to retrofit and install are the prefabricated metal ones and they are relatively inexpensive. If you plan to use an existing chimney, then be sure the stove that you are contemplating is compatible. Most often existing chimneys will need to have the lining redone with stainless steel in order for them to operate correctly using the newer, high efficiency stoves.
